Church of Sweden Will No Longer Refer to God as “He” or “Lord”

In 2018 the Evangelical Lutheran church, also known as the Church of Sweden, will update their Book of Worship to no longer refer to God as “He,” and will also stop using the term “Lord” because that implies the masculine.

“Last week, 251 leaders met at an eight-day convention. In a break from traditional Christianity, one of the ‘updates’ instructs pastors to no longer open services with ‘In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,’ but to use the ‘gender-neutral’ phrase ‘In the name of God and the Holy Trinity’,” Fr. Mark Hodges of LifeSite News reported.

This move shows that the Church of Sweden is putting modern political correctness above the Bible, which refers to God hundreds of times by masculine names and masculine pronouns, and at no time refers to Him with feminine names or feminine pronouns.

C.S. Lewis once spoke of this issue in his book God in the Dock:

Goddesses have, of course, been worshipped: many religions have had priestesses. But they are religions quite different in character from Christianity…. Since God is in fact not a biological being and has no sex, what can it matter whether we say He or She, Father or Mother, Son or Daughter?

Christians think that God Himself has taught us how to speak of Him. To say that it does not matter is to say either that all the masculine imagery is not inspired, is merely human in origin, or else that, though inspired, it is quite arbitrary and unessential. And this is surely intolerable

“With the new ‘non-sexist’ lectionary, we are faced with a tampering of the Holy Bible itself.” Dr. Tarazi, who has taught Theology for more the 40 years said. “What happened to the centuries-long stand of Protestantism that the biblical text must not be adulterated?”

According to Hodges, the Church of Sweden has also instructed leaders to change scriptural readings to “inclusive” language when referring to people.
