Dr. Caroline Leaf, communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist, has launched a weekly show on YouTube to equip and empower people to understand and use their minds to overcome mental ill-health and roadblocks.
Leaf believes in the power of the mind to change the brain, and therefore cognitive, emotional social and academic behavior. “The patients I encountered in my private practice and in the disadvantaged schools I worked in showed me that the human mind was far more resilient, and far more formidable, than what ‘science’ at that time claimed,” Leaf said.
A turning point in Leaf’s career was when she treated a 16-year-old girl with a traumatic brain injury who came out of a two-week coma. Leaf worked with the girl using the “self-regulatory, mind-driven five-step learning process” she was developing at the time. After the brain injury, the girl was operating at the level of an 8-year-old but was determined to catch up with her peers, and within eight months of working with Leaf she was not only back up to the level of her classmates, but her IQ increased twenty points and her academic performance improved.
“This was highly unusual, as research at that time showed the opposite was normally the case in TBI,” Leaf explained. “However, a negative trend was turned into a positive trend through intentional mind work.”
According to Leaf, the brain can be stimulated to change through focused, determined mind-action, and she has developed a Geodesic information processing theory.
“Not only do we direct our behavioral, emotional, and intellectual changes but we also create structural change in our brains and bodies as a result of our individualistic and complex thinking processes,” Leaf said. “I constantly emphasize the fact that, even though we cannot control our circumstances, we can control our reactions to our circumstances — we are not just victims of our biology.”
