‘Missing’ Iraqi Girl From Texas Said Her Parents Poured Hot Cooking Oil on Her and Beat Her When She Objected to Arranged Marriage

Maarib Al Hishmawi, a 16-year-old Iraqi girl living in Texas who was reported missing in January, has been found, but her parents are now facing abuse charges since Maarib said her mother and father poured hot cooking oil on her, and hit her with broomsticks because she objected to an arranged marriage.

“At least at one point she was choked almost to the point of unconsciousness,” Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said.

Maarib’s parents moved their family from Iraq to San Antonio Texas two years ago, and wanted the 16-year-old to marry a 28-year-old man from Dallas who offered them $20,000. Maarib had only met the man once when she was 15-years-old.

Abdulah Fahmi Kala Alhishmawi, 34, and Hamdiyah Sabah Alhishmawi, 33, are now facing at least one felony count of continuous family violence, and Maarib and her five siblings have been put into CPS care.
