In the old days, people got their news primarily from newspapers and television, with Fox News being one of the few resources conservatives could turn to in the mainstream. Not that anyone thought Fox News was perfect, it was just one of the few major networks that didn’t lean so much to the left.
Times have changed, and Fox News is no longer the main bogeyman for leftists – and not just because they give a platform to Megyn Kelly. The way people communicate has changed. People get their news online, and many no longer watch television. Youtube is a go-to place, and people seek digital content rather than paper. Many also try to avoid what they view as the corrupt, propaganda driven, lying mainstream media; and because of this, the news sources that leftists feel threatened by have also changed.
Media Matters, self described as “a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media” will now be focusing more on conservative news sources online like Breitbart, which was ranked #1 in the world for political social media in May/June 2016.
Hadas Gold of Politico reported that Media Matters is taking its coverage in a new direction. Their founder David Brock, a Hillary Clinton supporter, said in a statement. “Whether it’s blunting the ‘alt-right’s’ ascent, ensuring the media doesn’t normalize Trump’s bigotry or neutralizing the spread of fake news and other propaganda, Media Matters has critical work ahead.”
