The Palestinian Information Center, an organization with over half a million followers on Facebook, posted a photo of American actress Katherine Heigl on Wednesday, claiming she was a French doctor who arrived in the Gaza Strip “to offer medical help to the wounded Palestinian protesters.”
Never mind that Heigl isn’t French, didn’t go to the Gaza Strip, and isn’t a doctor – though she did play one on TV! From 2005 to 2010, Heigl starred as Izzie Stevens on the ABC television medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.
According to The Palestinian Information Center’s website, their material is “purely fact-based and rooted in real data compiled and published by a team of professional journalists…” and they are “dedicated to bringing the news of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a Pro-Palestine lens to a wide audience with absolute credibility and accuracy despite on-the-field difficulties and challenges.”
Needless to say, people called this organization out for the less than fact-based reporting, and The Palestinian Information Center was forced to delete the post and apologize.
When asked why they posted the false information in the first place, they responded: “It was a horrible mistake. There is no justification and we not never do anything like this on purpose. We own up to it.”
Some internet users continued to mock the post:
A more serious response came from Ofir Gendelman, Israeli diplomat and current spokesperson to the Arab media in the Israel Prime Minister’s Office, who asked “Who is coming next to treat Hamas terrorists? Dr. Grey? Dr. House? Those who have truth on their side don’t lie.”
Pallywood busted: The Palestine Information Center has posted this photo of actress @KatieHeigl as a "French doctor who came to help wounded Palestinian protesters".
